Roger A. Perkins December 18, 1938 - May 24, 2021

Roger A. Perkins passed away on May 24, 2021.  He was born in McCook, Nebraska in 1934 and moved to Idaho when he was four.  After graduating from Weiser High School in 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Hemenway.  They had three children, Rodney, Cindy, and Vicki.  Roger joined the Idaho Army National Guard in 1952 and went to work full-time for the Guard in 1956. In 1960 he received his commission as a 2/LT then attended Army flight training qualifying in both rotary and fixed wing aircraft.  He was the Commander of the Army Aviation Support Facility at Gowen Field, from 1962 to 1981 rising in rank from 1/LT to LTC.  In 1981, he accepted a four-year tour of active duty at the National Guard Bureau in Washington D.C. After returning to Idaho in 1985, he was selected to be the State Personnel Management Office for the Idaho National Guard and promoted to full Colonel. During his military career he flew over 6,000 flying hours in a variety of Army helicopters and airplanes. He retired from federal civil service in December 1989 and from the Army National Guard in June 1990 after nearly 38 years of service.

After retirement, serving the Lord became Roger’s passion. He was active in Trinity Fellowship Church and served as a Gideon for many years spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in many parts of the world.  He and his wife, Joyce, were members of the Christian Motorcyclist Assn and enjoyed touring the US and Canada on their Goldwing motorcycle. They were also “Snowbirds” for over 25 years and enjoyed many winters in Southern California.

Roger is survived by Joyce, his loving wife of 67 years, two wonderful children, Cindy Marlow of Boise, and Vicki Weber (Jim) of Riverton, UT; 8 outstanding grandchildren, Brooke Walcroft (Wally), Sarah Lizama (Gregg), Coty Jo Perkins, Andy McClure (Jaycee), Nick Perkins, Roger Weber, Libby Cofer (Jackson), and Hannah Weber. He and Joyce also have 7 precious great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Don (Kay) of Orange, CA; Ken of Weiser, ID; Tom (Cindy) of Albany, OR; and his sister, Sandra Perkins, of Mountain City, TN.

He was preceded in death by his son Rodney, his parents Everett & Claudine, and two older brothers, Jim & Bob.

A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at the Trinity Fellowship Church, 300 N. Latah in Boise on June 17, 2021, at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gideons International.  Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 1267, Meridian, ID  83680.

Roger’s final prayer was that all who read this obituary would humble themselves and ask Jesus Christ to come into their life and be their Lord & Savior.

    He was someone that no matter how much time had passed it didn’t matter…you picked up where you’d left off. His furver for the Lord and passion for his family was always written on his face. He was so loved because he gave so much love. I will always treasure the time spent with him in the most treasured places of my heart.

    Condolences and prayers for family and friends during this trying time in your life. Roger will be missed by many of us. He did leave us with many good memories to help carry us forward. May he Rest In Peace.

    Dear Friends, I am so saddened to have heard that Roger has died. I feel so fortunate to have met him. My warm memories are of sitting out on your veranda in the cool early mornings when wrapped in a blanket and a cup of coffee we talked about almost everything. I recently learned the phrase Flying West that is used in the Air Force, and I imagine it applying here, where I find it beautiful and comforting. At the end of the Tolkein Lord of the Rings tale, the main characters also Sail To The West. But in leaving sadness for their followers, they also leave hope. For you both are now the many tasks caring for all the different remains, all under the burden of loss. Far here in the East, I can only join you in my thoughts and memories. Once upon a time, I would have considered it more appropriate to send my thoughts by real mail. Now, for the immediacy of sending them, I use email. In fond memories, Charlotte
