Michael Spomer September 1, 1946 - September 24, 2021

Dedicated, loving husband, father of two, and grandfather of four, Michael Spomer, peacefully went home to be with our Lord after weeks of battling covid-19. On September 24, 2021, his wife was able to hold him in the ICU of St. Luke’s of Boise as he passed. He was 75 years old.

Always one to be extremely punctual and chronically early, Mike classically tried to sneak out of this world a few days early. But God had other plans, giving family and friends a few more days with his gentle soul before bringing him home.

Born on September 1, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, Mike grew up in the greater-Detroit area with his father, mother, twin sister, and older sister. Active in high school athletics and having a passion for math and science, he went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

During that time, he met his wife of 53 years, and they set off on a life of adventure together in the fall of 1968. From local vacations and trips abroad, Michael was not one to shy away from new or unknown experiences if the promise of learning more about the world around him awaited.

Mike and his wife raised their daughter and son in nearly every corner of the country, as Mike would seek to provide the best life possible for his family. Wisconsin, Louisiana, Michigan, California, New York, and eventually Idaho were lucky enough to be blessed by Mike and his dependability. Mike worked hard and was a steadfast planner, giving his family the best opportunities and experiences possible.

Not one to care about outward appearances or stature within the community, Mike sacrificed personal desires to ensure his family was fed, housed, and educated, all while creating fun and memorable experiences through games, trips, and vacations. From sailing on Lake Pontchartrain to Griswald-style Christmas tree hunts in the frozen tundra of Michigan to Panama City, Florida road trips, Mike’s family never went without and has irreplaceable memories they will always cherish.

When Mike’s grandchildren came into the picture, he continued to share his love of fun and fondness for learning with them. Camping trips, trampoline sessions, science experiments, and his light-hearted sense of humor enriched their lives.

His friends and colleagues at work didn’t go without their share of memories, too. Though Mike was in management and leadership roles, he would regularly dress up in hilarious costumes for meetings, bringing everyone at work together while teaching them in the process.

Mike was never a quitter. If he believed in something, if promised something, he would do his best to fulfill the task. If success was not the outcome, he would learn from the experience and carry that knowledge forward for the next challenge.

As his work life transitioned into retirement, he was able to pursue golf and woodworking, something he always found enjoyable. His golf game was steadily improving and his skills in the workshop, crafting wood furniture, led him to part-time work in the field. He left this world with the better part of ten fingers intact.

More important than accomplishments or career or hobbies was Mike’s faith in Jesus Christ. Having been introduced to the Lord at a young age in the Lutheran church, Mike made a commitment to Jesus later in his life and his relationship with our Savior grew exponentially throughout the years.

He and his wife were led to the Twenty-Six Eight church in Meridian, Idaho, where they became an integral part of the community. Mike was on the church board and gave his time and expertise to help spread God’s love among the congregation. Mike’s impact on the community both in church and outside of the church is a testament to Christ’s love in him. Because of Mike’s relationship with Jesus, his family and friends know that he is basking in the light of our Savior right now.

Mike’s family cannot find the words to fully express the depth of their gratefulness to the ICU staff at St. Lukes in Boise, Idaho. Their compassion, their expertise, and their dedication to Mike’s treatment during his time in the ICU was unparalleled as the nurses and doctors gave 100% of themselves in seeing Mike through to recovery. When recovery was not an option, they made sure he was comfortable and graciously allowed family to be present and say goodbye as he passed. The family has full and thankful hearts because of the medical staff’s commitment to Mike.
