Viola Mae Bailey

Viola Mae Markus Bailey, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away surrounded by her family on July 16, 2026. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, devotion, and unwavering love for those she cherished most.

Viola was born on September 2, 1937, in Meridian, Idaho, to Kathryn Koppal and William Markus. She was raised in Nampa, Idaho, alongside her seven siblings; five brothers and two sisters. As one of eight children, Viola was known for her adventurous spirit and tomboy nature. She loved climbing trees and spending her days outdoors. She often borrowed her brothers' pants and was never afraid to keep up with the boys.

On February 14, 1956, she married the love of her life, Ervin "Bill" Bailey. Together they began a journey that would span many decades and countless treasured memories. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Canada, where Bill played semi-professional baseball. They later settled in Indiana, where they welcomed their son, Dennis. As Bill pursued his education as a dental tech, the family moved to Mattoon, Illinois, where they were blessed with three more children; JoAnn “Jody,” Robert “Bob,” and Lisa.

In 1971, Viola and Bill returned to Boise, Idaho, and established their own dental laboratory. Viola worked alongside her husband for many years helping build the family business. Later, she worked for Hewlett-Packard, where she spent several years before retiring.

A gifted and talented homemaker, Viola found joy in creating beautiful things. She was an accomplished seamstress who lovingly made countless dresses for her granddaughters, including several prom and wedding gowns. Her creativity knew no bounds, she enjoyed painting, crocheting, doll making, and nearly every craft she encountered. Her hands were rarely still, and her creations were treasured by all who received them.

Christmas held a special place in Viola's heart. She and Bill spent countless hours building an elaborate Christmas village, adding new pieces year after year. The display became a beloved tradition for family and friends. She also carried on a cherished family cookie-baking tradition that originated with her mother, creating memories that became the highlight of many of her grandchildren’s childhoods.

In the 1980s, Viola and Bill built a cabin in Garden Valley, Idaho. What began as a labor of love became a sanctuary for their family and a place where countless memories were made. The cabin continues to be a source of relaxation and joy for her family.

Above all else, Viola loved her family. She delighted in every opportunity to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or simply be present. Her love was constant, generous, and unconditional.

She will be remembered for her heart of gold, her creative spirit, and the deep love she had for her family. Her legacy will live on in the traditions she created and the memories she helped build.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her daughter-in-law Peggy Bailey, and her son Robert Bailey. She is survived by her children, Dennis Bailey; Jody Alvarez [John]; Lisa Howe [Scott]; her daughter -in-law, Mitzi Bailey; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her tremendous pride and joy.

A celebration of Viola's life will be held on Thursday August 6th, 11:00 am at Bowman Funeral Directors (10254 W Carlton Bay Dr. Boise, ID 83714). A reception will follow at Cloverdale Funeral Home (1100 N Cloverdale Rd. Boise, ID 83713) from 1:00-3:00 pm.

The family would like to thank all those who loved and cared for Viola throughout her life. She will be greatly missed and forever loved.
