Boise native Sharon Hervey DeWitt passed away peacefully while in memory care, just shy of her 88th birthday. She follows her older brother, Chuck Hervey, who passed away this October, pictured below in a characteristic moment of shared laughter and silliness.
Sharon embodied a life defined by the spirit of adventure, hometown loyalty, enduring friendships, and devotion to family.
Sharon’s sense of adventure first called her to pack up her VW bug and leave Boise for the Hollywood hills, after graduating from what was then Boise Junior College. Her California adventure then steered her to travel around the world with her first husband (Robert “Bob” Schul) in pursuit of his Olympic glory, with a pit-stop as an expat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after adopting their only daughter (Robin Schul Thurber). Further pursuits led Sharon to small-town Ohio, where she helped launch a local tennis club, but more importantly, established family connections with her in-laws and formed treasured lifelong friendships.
Still, Sharon’s heart longed for her beloved hometown of Boise, this time packing up a U-Haul to trek back west for new adventures, including working at the Idaho State Capitol in the Attorney General’s office as a legal secretary/administrative assistant, and later zipping around the western US on the back of a motorcycle expertly driven by her second husband (Gary DeWitt).
Sharon was proud of her Boise roots, serving as the family genealogist for the Hervey and McNees clans and as the unofficial historian for the Boise High School class of 1956. She fondly reminisced about growing up in the northeast part of town with her brothers (Charles “Chuck” and Robert “Bobby” Hervey), attending Central School and both North and East Junior High Schools (with the honor of christening the Hornets mascot, as a member of East’s inaugural class), participating in numerous clubs and activities while at Boise High (including playing on the varsity tennis team), and spending many summers in McCall.
Sharon’s most cherished adventure, however, was her much-awaited role as “Grammy” to her grandchildren, Liam and Lane Thurber, who brought her immeasurable pride and joy.
Sharon will be remembered for her curiosity about the world, her friendship, and her steadfast love for family and home. She also had a soft spot for animals (especially cats), old books, and sweet treats.
A private family committal will be held, with a larger celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
