Ronald Lee Hughes, a lifelong broadcaster and respected radio station owner in the Pacific Northwest, passed away in Meridian, Idaho on May 26, 2025 at the age of 80. Born in Ainsworth, Nebraska, Ron’s passion for radio started in high school, where he enrolled in a radio class and worked at the local station for two years. That early spark led to a lifelong career in broadcasting. He attended Military Prep School in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York City before returning west to launch his professional radio career in Payette, Idaho. From there, he advanced through the industry, eventually serving as General Manager at KGAL Radio in Albany, Oregon, and KVAN Radio in Vancouver, Washington.
In 1989, Ron returned to Ontario, Oregon and served as the General Manager for KSRV. In 1992, Ron returned to Pendleton, Oregon, where he had once worked as a salesperson and announcer at KTIX. That year, he and a business partner purchased KUMA-AM/FM. In 1997, they expanded their holdings with the acquisition of KOHU-AM/FM in Hermiston and ownership of KWHT/KTIX. Ron became sole owner of KOHU and KQFM in 2002 and retired in 2016 after selling the stations. Outside of radio, Ron believed deeply in public service. He was active in both Ontario and Pendleton, serving on the Chamber of Commerce in both cities. He volunteered for the Pendleton Round-Up, served on the Pendleton City Council, and held the role of Vice President on the Pendleton Country Club Board of Directors. He also served on the Pendleton Foundation Trust board, helping support local causes and initiatives. Ron married Winifred Gwilliam on June 29, 1968, and they had a son, Corby Hughes. Their marriage later ended in divorce. On March 30, 1991, Ron married Gloria Shunn—the love of his life—with whom he shared many joyful years. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Hughes; sisters, Charlene Hughes and Phyllis Hughes; son, Corby Hughes (Aimee Hughes); stepchildren, Christine Davis, Jeff Shunn, and Billy Shunn (Jackie Shunn); step-grandchildren, Jami Austin (Ryan Austin), Blake Shunn, Jack Shunn, Cade Shunn, Tyson Davis and step-great-grandchildren, Brian Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, and Lilly Davis. He was preceded in death by his father, Calvin Hughes; mother, Shirley Hughes; and brother, Larry Hughes. Ron enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Oregon, on June 14 at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at the Ontario Train Depot at 12:00 p.m. Ron Hughes lived a life of service, leadership, and deep connection. His legacy lives on in the stations he built, the communities he supported, and the family and friends who loved him.
