Rodger Clarence Swanson August 19, 1948 – May 1, 2025

Rodger Clarence Swanson, a lifelong rancher and proud steward of the land, passed away on May 1, 2025, at the age of 76.

Rodger was born on August 19, 1948, to Clarence and Florence “Babe” Swanson and was raised on the family ranch at 17 Mile near Salmon, Idaho. From an early age, he developed a deep love for ranching and the cattle industry—a passion that would define his life’s work.

A 1966 graduate of Salmon High School, Rodger attended the University of Idaho for two years before returning to his roots to run the family ranch. There, he built a respected operation centered around registered Angus cattle under the name Leadore Angus. His annual spring bull sale became a trusted tradition in the ranching community and a testament to his dedication and expertise.

In addition to running the home place, Rodger acquired the Mabey Ranch, which he operated alongside the family ranch until 2013, when he sold the original homestead. His commitment to excellence in ranching remained constant throughout his life.

Rodger was a true cattleman—meticulous, knowledgeable, and unwavering in his commitment. He could recite any statistic about his herd and took immense pride in the quality of the cattle he raised. He ran a tight ship and earned the respect of fellow ranchers for his professionalism, integrity, and deep understanding of the business.

Outside of his work, Rodger enjoyed the simple pleasures of life in Salmon, especially his weekly lunches and visits with close friends Don Hatch, Donny Anderson, Corky Oeding, and many others. These gatherings were a cherished part of his routine and reflected the loyalty, humor, and lasting friendships he held dear.

In 2000, Rodger married Jackie Coles. They later divorced in 2019.

Rodger was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Florence and Clarence Swanson. He is survived by his younger sister, Nancy Burch; nieces Tracy (Jeremy) Burgess and Kimberly (Kevin) Laurie; and great-nieces and nephews Bailee (Spencer) Benjamin, Kaitlyn Burgess, Sydnee Laurie, Blazen Burgess, and Connor Laurie.

Graveside services will be held on June 7, 2025, with a luncheon to follow at the Elks Hall in Salmon, Idaho.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Rodger’s memory to Salmon FFA or a charity of your choice.

Rodger’s boots may be empty, but his footsteps will forever echo across the pastures he so dearly loved.
