With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Nicolas Johnson, who left us far too soon at the age of 31. An old soul with a creative spirit and a curious mind, Nic will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Nic was brilliant and passionate about discovery, earning his degree in chemical engineering from the University of Idaho and dedicating himself to a career that blended intellect and creativity, most recently as an engineer at EV Group in Boise. He loved giving back as a teaching assistant when he was still in school, and his students may remember him with long hair (aka “flow”), his tie dye lab coat, and playing Rage Against the Machine in the lab to set the necessary vibes of doing hardcore science.
Beyond work and academics, Nic was an artist. He loved music. He wrote song lyrics, played the drums and guitar, and was the bassist in a band. He drew often – typically colorful, imaginative designs of “sacred geometry” and other musings. He found profound meaning in Native American spirituality, crystals, and metaphysical energies, which shaped his perspective on life and understanding the world around him. When he met someone new, it was only a matter of time till he asked for their birthday so he could deep-dive into their astrological sign and understand how they connect with the universe.
We remember Nic’s quick wit, contagious laugh, fierce loyalty, and generous heart. We also remember him driving around with his sunglasses on, hat backwards, windows down, hair flowing, and music blasting, singing along or playing imaginative drums on the steering wheel. Whether with family, friends, or strangers, he made people feel seen, valued, and understood. The uniqueness and vigor with which he lived his life left an impression on all of us.
Nic is preceded in death by his mother, Heidi; his grandmother, Bobbi; and his half-brother, Torey. He is survived – and missed dearly – by his younger sister, Erika, and her husband, Simon; his younger brother, Tanner, and his wife, Jayme, and twin babies, Brooklyn and Hudson; his father, Mark, and his step-mother, Josephine; his step brothers, Ruairi and Hugh; and many, many extended family members and friends who cherished him.
In remembrance of Nic, we celebrate his life and the light he brought to ours. His legacy will live on through the love he shared with us, his unapologetic authenticity, the memories he created, the music he loved, and the beauty he found in love, art, and friendship.
A private service will be held for close family and friends this summer on his birthday, July 12th.
Nic, you will forever be in our hearts. “The Dude abides”.
We love you,
Your Family
