Micah Sue Colby, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful follower of Jesus, passed surrounded by her family into the arms of Jesus on May 20, 2026, at the age of 81.
Micah was born on July 17, 1944, in Fort Worth Texas, to Louie Monroe Barrett and Hattie Louise Furlow Barrett. In 1948, she moved to Hawaii with her parents when her father accepted a call to pastor the First Baptist Church of Honolulu, a place and season of life she carried fondly in her heart for decades.
In her first year at San Diego State she met a dashing young Navy swabby Robert Earl Colby. After a short engagement, they eloped in Yuma Arizona on June 6th, 1963. Together they built a life full of faith, adventure, hard work, and family until Robert’s passing in 2001. Throughout her life, Micah embraced movement, creativity, and reinvention, living in more than 40 homes across California, Nevada, Washington, and Idaho. Whether remodeling homes, raising children, teaching Bible studies, quilting, working as a Realtor, or gathering people around a table, she made every place feel warm and welcoming. She never could pass up an open house without explaining exactly how she would “jazz it up.”
Following Robert’s passing, Micah continued to embrace life with curiosity and courage. She treasured opportunities to travel with a dear friend, and a couple of her granddaughters, visiting places including Israel, China, South Africa, the Greek Isles, and Hawaii.
Micah was the proud mother of Tia Oplinger (Robert), Carrie Jorgens (Bruce), and Michael Colby (Kim). She was also the cherished grandmother of 12 grandchildren: Kasha Almon, Robert Oplinger, Barrett Oplinger, Ben Jorgens, Anna Stevens, Grace Young, Katherine Jorgens, Iphis Aire, Lydia Colby, Calvin Colby, Jac Colby and Mac Colby as well as 12 great-grandchildren, with one more precious great-grandchild on the way. Her family was one of her greatest joys, and she rarely missed a birthday, graduation, wedding, or opportunity to cheer on the people she loved.
Her faith in Jesus shaped every part of her life. At Eagle Christian Church, she faithfully served as a Stephen Minister and was a devoted prayer partner to many throughout her lifetime. She prayed faithfully for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and spoke often about heaven with anticipation and hope.
Her favorite Scripture was Exodus 14:14: “The Lord shall fight for you.” It reflected the way she lived — learning to trust God fully through every season of life and not to live in fear or feeling like you needed to fix things yourself. She worked to rely on God in every situation.
Those who knew Micah will remember her sharp wit, warmth, independence, fierce love for family, and the steady way she pointed people toward Jesus. Micah will be laid to rest in Latah, Washington, alongside her mother and her husband.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Christian Church, 100 S. Short Rd., Eagle, Idaho, officiated by John McMath, the family’s long time pastor and dear friend.
