Merry Ellen Aschenbrenner Trudeau

Merry Ellen Aschenbrenner Trudeau, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, public servant, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family and close friends. Her 78 years were marked by her deep devotion to family, and her joy and love were felt by everyone around her.

Merry was born on January 8, 1947, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, the eldest of four sisters. From an early age, she embraced responsibility with quiet strength and kindness, qualities that would define her life. She attended Catholic schools through the tenth grade before transferring to Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids, where she graduated in 1965.

In September of that same year, Merry married her high school sweetheart, Richard Trudeau. They were married for 60 years and raised a family that was the center of Merry’s world.

In 1976, Merry began a distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service. Starting as a clerical worker, her intelligence, integrity, and dedication quickly led to a series of increasingly responsible roles, including Public Affairs Officer and Problem Resolution Officer. Her career culminated in her appointment as Director of the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, where she became a trusted voice for fairness, accountability, and compassion in government service.

Upon her retirement in 2006, Merry’s 30 years of exemplary federal service were formally recognized by three of Idaho’s congressional delegates. Congressman Mike Simpson presented her with a United States flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in her honor. Congressman Butch Otter and Senator Larry Craig recorded her service to the nation in the Congressional Record—an enduring testament to her impact and dedication.

Above all else, Merry treasured her family. She is survived by her husband, Richard; her sons, Brian (Kelly) and Jeff (Yvonne); her grandchildren, Jacob (Taylor), Matthew (Karli), Tessa, Julia, and Ryan; and her great-granddaughter, Ellen. She also leaves behind her sisters and countless friends whose lives were touched by her warmth, kindness, and generous spirit. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and traditions that her family and friends will hold close to their hearts forever.

Merry will be interred during a private family burial on January 10, 2026, at Dry Creek Cemetery in Eagle, Idaho. A Celebration of Life honoring Merry’s remarkable journey will be held at 3:00pm on January 10 at the Meridian Senior Center, 1920 N Records Way, Meridian, ID 83646.
