Listen to Obituary

Kay Judy Dougherty peacefully passed away with her daughter, Yvonne, by her side in Boise, Idaho. She went home to heaven and is now rejoicing with the angels in the presence of The Lord, and is with the love of her life, Charles “Chuck”.

She is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Yvonne and Richard Scharf, Maureen and Joseph Tesoro, Cheryl and John Hughes, and Sharon and Darrell Smith. She was blessed with four grandchildren: Joseph, Rachel, Bryce and Madalyn as well as nine great grandchildren.

Known by family and friends as “Judy”, she was married to her beloved husband Chuck for 52 years. Judy had great faith, led a godly life and served the Lord alongside Chuck. She was mostly a stay at home mom, juggling part time jobs and holding down hearth and home while Chuck served in the Navy, often at sea for nine months or more at a time.

Judy pursued an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and began a new career when the girls were old enough to “watch” each other, driving school buses for the Poway Unified School District. She especially excelled in transporting students with special needs. After retiring, she renewed her passion for sewing that grew into a busy custom wedding gown business. She later began the intricate art and craft of applique quilting with the same passion. She passed along her gift of creativity and sewing to her daughters.

Judy and Chuck loved their children and grandchildren as well as their church family. Their home was always open to all and they welcomed in many young men and women, offering a homemade meal and a comfortable place to hang out. Judy was the quintessential hostess! She also was a loving servant and help to many behind the scenes. She especially had a heart for the disabled, socially awkward and those suffering from terminal illnesses.

Judy’s daughters have fond memories of long Sunday drives with the family and days at local and state parks with big picnic lunches lovingly prepared by their mother. Judy fostered an undeniable lifelong closeness amongst her daughters. Her daughters describe her character as resilient, reliable, with fortitude and strength that complimented her lifelong convictions and accomplishments. Judy leaves behind a beautiful legacy in her family and will be dearly missed.
