Juan Hormaechea
1936 – 2023

Juan Hormaechea passed away on November 16, 2023, at the age of 86. He was born in Mendata, Vizcaya in the Basque region of Spain November 20 th , 1936. He was raised in a loving family of 7 siblings. When he was 18, he came to the United States, as many young Basque men did, to shepherd in Idaho. Being in a new land helped create many hours of stories he would share of his adventures.

In 1968 he met Maribel Ocamica and were married in Boise, Idaho. They were blessed with two children, Elizabeth and John. They raised their family on the Boise Bench.

After a stint as a butcher, Juan began a career in construction. First with the Hell’s Canyon dam project, then with King Construction. Juan took great pride in his work and helped grow Concrete Placing Company wherever work was to be had in Boise, across Idaho and in Nevada for over twenty years.

Juan was a master gardener and he enjoyed seeing his vast array of peppers and garlic grow while teaching his children the value of raising your own food. His favorite pastime was going down to the Basque Center and playing Muz for hours while relaxing with his friends. He also was an avid boxing fan that provided him enjoyment into his later years.

Juan is survived by his wife, two children, and sister Mari Sol. He was preceded in death by his parents Ambrusio and Rafaela, brothers Rufino, Julian, Bernardino, and Angel and sisters Floren and Felisa.

Per Juan’s request there will be no public service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Basque Foundation, 601 W Grove Street, Boise, Idaho 83702, or a charity of your choice.
