John Theodore “Ted” Byrd, known and loved by many in Nampa, passed away on September 10, 2023, at the age of 82, surrounded by the warmth of his family and friends.
Born on January 24, 1941, Ted was the son of John and Alice Byrd. He graduated from Jerome High School in 1958 and later found his way to Nampa, Idaho, where he attended Boise Junior College. In 1963, he proudly joined the Idaho Air National Guard as a Second Lieutenant. Ted’s passion for flying led him to successfully complete USAF/UPT pilot training in 1965. On June 12, 1970 Ted married Pam (Perry) Byrd. In 1981, he graduated from Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama.
Ted’s military journey was truly exceptional. He worked his way up the ranks to become a Brigadier General in 1993 within the Idaho Air National Guard at Gowen Field. Along the way, he logged countless hours piloting various aircraft, including the T-37. T-38, T-33, F-102, RF-4C, and C-26. Ted received numerous military honors, such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with five devices, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, Air Force Excellence Award, State of Idaho Emergency Duty Ribbon, and the State of Idaho Service Ribbon.
Outside of his military life, Ted was also an entrepreneur. He and his wife, Pam, owned and operated Great Western Pizza, Inc., in Nampa and Caldwell, established in 1973, until they retired in 2007. Ted’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to his community and family were evident in his professional life.
In addition to his achievements, Ted had a deep passion for collecting old cars. His collection included a 1956 Skyhawk Studebaker and 1940 For Deluxe Sedan. His love for cars took him on adventures around the country, where he connected with fellow car enthusiasts.
Ted was a devoted grandfather who cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He was a constant presence at their school events and sporting activities, always ready to catch a fly ball at a baseball game or offer his support at a soccer game. He was the proud grandfather who never missed an opportunity to celebrate his grandchildren’s accomplishments and share in their joys.
Among Ted’s many cherished memories with his grandchildren was the story of the “big cheese.” During countless trips to Lake Powell, Ted introduced an 8-foot inflatable that quickly became a beloved member of the family. His grandchildren affectionately named it the “big cheese.” Whether at Lake Powell or any other family gathering, the “big cheese” always brought smiles and laughter, creating lasting memories.
Ted is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Pam Perry Byrd, and their daughters Terri (Brian) Hedges, Julie Byrd, and Stacie (Lynn) Waite. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom have been deeply touched by his warmth, wisdom and quick humor. Ted is also survived by his siblings, Betty (David) Alger, Patsy Fattig, Dick (Jesse) Byrd, Myrl Byrd, and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Karen Mendoza and the staff at The Cottages at Lochsa Falls and to Trudy Hagler, Terry, Jen, and Krista from White Oak Hospice for their compassionate care during Ted’s final days.
