Jack was born April 9, 1929, to Raymond and Olivia Pfeffer in Berkeley, California. Most of his childhood years were spent in the Santa Clara Valley, although he did live in Honolulu for two years, 1935 to 1937. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and the University of Santa Clara.
In 1949, Jack took a summer job with Owens-Corning Fiberglas who was building a new plant in Santa Clara, with start-up projected to be approximately 30 days after he started working. He quickly became a supervisor, then a department manager. He worked for Owens-Corning for over 23 years, managing many departments and operations, as well as being involved in product development and marketing.
In 1972, Jack left Owens-Corning to become a co-founder and operations manager of Conglas, a fiberglass roofing plant in Bakersfield, California. A few years later he was named executive vice president and in 1986 was named president. Under his leadership the firm's research and development capabilities were expanded and new products were developed to introduce the use of fiberglass into new markets. Jack held several patents for these products and processes.
In 1988, an allied company was formed, UPF Corporation, with Jack as president. The new company produced fiberglass filter media and aircraft insulation products. At the time, it was one of only two such facilities in the world.
Jack loved to travel and his career offered him the opportunity to do so. He had visited all of the 50 United States with the exception of West Virginia and would always tell people, "Yes, but I was once within a mile of the West Virginia border!" He visited all the European and Scandinavian countries many times, as well as China and Russia.
In 1994, he and his family moved to Eagle, Idaho. Now semi-retired, he continued to work on product development, all foreign marketing and consulting with manufacturers around the world, including Elon Musk and Space X.
Jack was a devoted family patriarch and enjoyed frequent gatherings with family and friends. As an avid historian and talented storyteller, he entertained and educated generations. He never met a stranger and his generous spirit and integrity touched people around the world.
Jack loved Idaho and was a Boise State fan long before the Fiesta Bowl put them on the map. He was also fond of working in his yard, building model trains, inventing gadgets and was always in the company of many beloved pets over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pattie; son John; daughter Lisa (Richard}; daughter Suzanne (Michael}; three granddaughters and two great granddaughters, as well as cousins in Germany and California.
Final services will be private. Those wishing to pay respects are invited to plant a tree in Jack's memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bowman Funeral Parlor of Garden City.
