The life of Jeffrey Dean Leonard was powered by love, laughter, and determination.
Born on November 28, 1962, in Kansas City, Kansas, to William “Cotton” and Mary Julene Leonard, Jeff grew up with a hands-on curiosity, a big heart, and a smile that never faded.
After earning his certificate in both diesel and gasoline engines from the Universal Technical Institute, Jeff built a career doing what he loved: working on engines and keeping things running for people who counted on him. But no accomplishment meant more to him than his family. He treasured time with his wife, Ruth; his daughters, Stephanie Hopkins (Blake) and Rebecca Leonard (Gabriel Sanchez); and in recent years, two of the greatest joys of his life, his granddaughters Charlotte and Clara.
Jeff’s passions spilled into every corner of his life, from Ford vehicles and racing, to camping trips, woodworking projects, dancing to his favorite rock bands, gardening in the sunshine, and exploring new places with the people he loved. His friends and family describe him as genuine and authentic, and he accepted everyone as they were. His quick wit and sense of humor could fill a room, and he made sure everyone laughed, even during his battle with cancer. From the day he was diagnosed, Jeff fought for every single day he could, showing bravery and grace until the very end.
We’ll gather for a celebration of Jeff’s life at a later date, sharing the stories, music, and joy he gave us all.
Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the West Valley Humane Society or the River of Life Men’s Center.
Jeff’s music lives on in laughter, in love, and in the quiet moments when a favorite song brings him back to us.
