Jim Vance passed away peacefully at his Garden City home on November 7th at the age of 82. His zest for life and love of people left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met.
Born in Harlem New York to Alexander McDowell Vance and Mildred Owens Vance, he grew up in Staten Island with a spirit of adventure that never faded.
Stationed in France and Germany for his US Army enlistment, he carried his connection to the armed services forward by ultimately making a lifelong commitment and career out of caring for our veterans while working for Veterans Administration offices all over our country, finally retiring here in Boise, and forever keeping Boise his home.
Those who knew Jim will remember him for his vibrant and caring personality. Whether he was telling a story from his many life adventures or taking a long bike ride with friends that always seemed to end with a well-earned beer or two, he approached life with dedication, humor, curiosity, and heart.
He is preceded in death by his brother William Vance. He is survived by his wife Irene, his son and best friend Marc, his brothers Alex Vance of North Carolina and Doug Vance of Vancouver Canada, all of whom will carry forward his spirit of joy and connection.
Jim will be deeply missed, but his stories, laughter and warmth will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A committal will be on November 20, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery located at 10100 N. Horseshoe Bend, Idaho.
