It is said that as long as you remember a person, they are still with you. If so, Jack will be with us for many years. He was born in Huntington Park, California in 1924. He passed away August 31, 2023, almost living long enough to reach his 99th birthday. He was born to Charles and Mary Ann Long. His mother died when he was five years old, which left an indelible mark on him throughout his life. Along with his brother, Guy, Jack joined the U.S. Navy in 1941.

After his time in the Navy, he entered his lifelong career as a plumber and owned his own business throughout most of his work life. His first marriage was to Dorothy, and they had two children, Jeffrey and Kristine. His second marriage was to Betty Jean Long. His stepchildren were John and Jim Taylor and Cheryl Keltner. He is survived by his sister, Sally Hall, his son Jeffrey, his daughter-in-law, Jan, his son-in-law, John Quicker, his grandson, Michael, Michael’s wife Christina, his great grandson, Austin, his granddaughter, Sierra, Sierra’s husband Jeremiah, his great granddaughters, Bella and Hannah. He is also survived by his step daughter, Cheryl, her son Jedediah, and his wife Freda.

Jack and Dorothy Long originally lived in Bothell, Washington and soon moved to southern California. While in Washington his love of animals began, owning award-winning horses and a cow. After Jack and Betty Jean married and moved to Point Reyes Station, California, Jack became involved with angora goats and guard donkeys. At a later date he decided to change from goats to birds, and he eventually owned several hundred. Jack was often referred to as the bird man of Point Reyes. He also had dogs over the years; his last dog, Buddy held a special place in his heart to the end.
