Herbert Stott Malany
Herbert Stott Malany, born in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 22, 1940, embarked on a remarkable journey filled with adventure, dedication, and love. Growing up just outside Cincinnati on a property that held a house listed on the National Registry of Historic Homes, Herb’s early years were steeped in history and charm. Herb’s first taste of independence came with his first car, a ’39 coup, which symbolized his spirit of exploration and freedom. After a brief stint at Miami University of Ohio, Herb’s life took a turn in a new direction when he discovered the University of Idaho in 1960 through a brochure. This led him to move to Moscow, ID where he joined the Delta Chi fraternity and earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry.
Herb’s career path was defined by his passion for the outdoors and forestry. He worked as a Regional Forest Manager for Boise Cascade from 1961 to 2001, showcasing his commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. Alongside his professional achievements, Herb built a family with his wife Karen Koppang, whom he married in 1961. Together they raised two sons, Drew born in Cascade in1963, and Steve born in McCall in 1965. In 1967 the family moved to Boise and raised their sons until tragedy struck when Karen passed away in 1988 after battling cancer. Despite this loss, Herb remained resilient and continued to nurture his family.
In 1993, he found love again and married Donna Kindler, embarking on a new chapter in Eagle. Retirement in 2001 allowed Herb and Donna to focus on creating lasting memories with their family, especially their grandchildren. They were among the founding members of their RV club, Gems of the Road, and loved exploring the western US with these dear friends. Even after Donna’s passing in 2022, Herb remained dedicated to cherishing moments with his family and friends.
Herb passed away on May 7t, 2024 at the age of 84. Herb’s legacy is not just in his professional accomplishments but also in the bonds he forged with his family. With six grandchildren, Herb continued to share his love for travel, often talking about the many destinations around the world, from China to Egypt to Europe and especially Hawaii, which he visited yearly from 1987 to 2023. Herb and Donna created cherished memories with their grandchildren taking them on camping trips in Idaho and visiting them often in Montana, Oregon, and Utah. Herb knew the roads to this grandkid’s homes like the back of his hand!
Herb’s life story is a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring spirit of adventure that defined his journey through the years. To quote Herb, “Life is Good.” Herb is survived by his siblings Ralph Malany and Judy Penry, his son’s Drew (Susan) and Steve (Nellie) and his stepson Greg Kindler (Renee) and six grandchildren, Morgan, Keegan, Max, Sam, Claire and Christian. Herb’s Celebration of Life will be held on June 8th, 2024, at 10 AM at Eagle Hills Church.
