Garyl Guy Fisher was born on May 6, 1924 in an old farm house in Newdale, Idaho to Guy Dennis Fisher, a sheep shearer, and to Chloe Clark, a descendant of the famous Idaho Ricks family. Garyl had an older brother, Max, and an older sister, Madge. When Garyl was only 5 years old, his mom contracted cancer, so they sold the farm and moved to Oakland, California for treatments. The care his mother received there extended her life for two more years, but at the age of 7, Garyl’s mother passed away.
Initially he was raised in Oakland, California, then they bought a farm and moved to Escalon, California. During his high school years, he would wake early, milk the cows, do his chores and then walked three miles to school. He played tennis, basketball (where he earned the name Swisher Fisher), and performed the lead in the school musical. Garyl had a beautiful voice with which he blessed others throughout his life. He graduated from high school just six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served his country in the United States Air Force.
Garyl worked as a newspaper writer in Oakland, California and was proud to be the sports beat editor. It was in this capacity he met and married a beautiful brunette, Bonnie Miller. They we married in 1948 and sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. Five daughters followed over the next 11 years.
Garyl was talented in so many ways. His career led him to many entrepreneurial endeavors. He was the founder of a newspaper distribution company, a writer, a recording engineer, and an author of children’s books, most notable being “The Legend of Teton Tony, the King of the Mountain Rams,” and eventually the owner and creator of Spice West Company.
Garyl loved interacting with his five girls and their families. Road trips, travelling, camping, and singing were some of his favorite pastimes to enjoy with his family.
Garyl was an active, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in numerous leadership callings including many years as a temple worker in the Boise, Idaho Temple.
For his 99 th birthday his large posterity gathered to celebrate his life that was full of love and service.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bonne Miller Fisher, his oldest daughter Laura Grimes McGlenn (Roger McGlenn), and his granddaughter, Michelle Hochhalter. He is survived by his four daughters, Caryl (Scott Christensen), Barbara, Nancy (John Hochhalter), Rebecca (Gary Hansen), 20 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held, 10:00 am, Saturday, July 1, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 484 S. Main St., Star, Idaho, with a visitation beginning at 9:00 am.
A committal service will be held 1:00 pm, Thursday, July 6, 2023 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise, Idaho.
