With heavy hearts we share the passing of our brother, son, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend Gail Gordon Hofert. Gail passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Friday April 24, 2026.
Gail was born on May 9,1955 in Jerome Idaho to Frank “Gus” and Alta Josephine Hofert. Growing up, they lived in Jerome, Pocatello and Boise ID. He graduated from Borah High School, Class of 1973 and studied at Boise State University. Gail worked for many years as an accountant at both OreIda and J.R. Simplot.
Gail lived a full and vibrant life. He was always moving, always doing something, never one to sit still for long. Whether it was his love for sailboats, guitars, playing in a band, his passion for VW buses or traveling, he found joy in simple things and lived life in a way that inspired those around him. He also enjoyed spending time with his family in Cascade ID and camping and hiking with his friends. You could find him at most BSU games, football and basketball, at Meridian Speedway or Glen Morgan Speedway supporting his nephew by attending races or racing along with him. He loved Grand Prix racing and he loved Steelheads Hockey. He was even able to make it to a game last year thanks to his good friends!
His nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews were all his kids. He was very generous to them in many ways, giving good advice, always telling them to “get hot” on getting things done that will enhance their lives, reminding them to chase their dreams and work hard, sharing baking recipes, showing up randomly at their favorite fishing holes, even racing go karts with his great-nephew. We all looked forward every year to his world-famous lemon bars and sour dough bread at Christmastime. He taught us all very valuable lessons in life.
Over the past year, Gail faced a difficult battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Even through it all, he showed incredible strength, courage, and resilience that defined who he was. ALS may have taken his body, but it never took his spirit, it never took his sense of humor or his love and generosity that he gave so freely to everyone around him. He fought harder than most people would fight. He fought with courage and dignity, and he fought until the very end.
Our family would like to thank the endless hours of care for Gail provided by family, friends, and his very dedicated and loving caregivers Andrew, Rita, March, Kaylee, Nikki and Janae. You all became family to him and we were very fortunate to have you all take such great care of Gail. Thank you to Visiting Angels, Serengeti Home Care and Horizon Hospice for all the love and care you provided to not only Gail but our family this past year.
Gail was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Alta Jo Hofert, as well as his grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his two most beloved doggies, Woofy and Roxi. He is survived by his sisters, Lynda Nafsinger of Meridian ID, Diane (Bob) Hale of Kuna ID, his nieces and nephew Angie Shaffer of Kuna ID, Kara (Jim) Keays of Caldwell ID, and Jeff (Whitney) Nafsinger of Philadelphia PA. He is also survived by numerous close cousins, great nieces, great nephews, and so many lifelong friends. Gail was fortunate to have all of these people here for him which is a true testament to what kind of person Gail was and how he lived his life. The world feels a little quieter without him here. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten by all who knew him.
