Fred Albert Freeland was born March 11, 1935, in Boise, Idaho to Harmon Helvern “Hank” Freeland and Virginia Rhoda “Dode” Nye Freeland. He passed away January 18, 2026, at his home in Boise, Idaho at the age of 90.
Fred grew up in Boise, except during WWII, when his family moved to Seattle, WA where his dad worked in the Bremerton Shipyards. Dad would tell tales of how he and his sister Shirley would hop on a bus and go exploring the Seattle area or pick blackberries in the fall. He remembered how dark it was at night due to black-out curtains as part of the city’s defense against aerial raids. His family moved back to Boise at the end of the war, where Fred attended school. He met his best friend, Gene Hardy around this time. While at Boise High, he took a vocational printing class which was instrumental in starting his career in the printing business. After high school, he joined the Army Reserves and attended boot camp in Fort Ord California. He signed up for the six-month Reserve Forces Act after which he returned to Boise and started working at Syms-York Co. as a pressman/printer and later owned and operated his own printing business, Economy Printing. He married Dorothy M. Boehm in 1958 and in 1960, they purchased their acreage in northwest Boise where they raised beef cattle, chickens, and Springer Spaniel dogs. Fred enjoyed bird hunting, so he always had a trusty bird dog by his side! He also enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He was very competitive, so we learned at a very young age not to play cards with him! He and Dorothy bowled, square danced, snowmobiled, traveled and were avid BSU football and basketball (both men’s and women’s) fans. They enjoyed going to their cabin in the Secesh area for many years. Fred’s best friend, Gene and his wife Pat, were a huge part of many camping and traveling adventures!
Fred is survived by his sister Ginny Campbell, daughters JoAnne Tackitt (John), and Vicki Kovash, granddaughters, Taylor Kovash and Jordan Kovash along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, parents and siblings – Shirley Deming and Steve Freeland.
The family wishes to invite Fred’s family and friends to celebrate his life at their home on Hill Road on Saturday, March 14, 2026, anytime between 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Food and refreshments will be served.
Special thanks to Michele Downs, DeAnna Root, niece Karen Johnson and granddaughter Taylor, for their care and kindness, especially during the last eight months.
