Eugene Carlyle Haskell

October 30, 1939 — November 4, 2025

Boise

On Tuesday November 4, 2025 Eugene Carlyle Haskell age 86 passed away with his children by his side. Love and prayers and his unwavering faith in God had sustained him through a difficult year of health struggles until he was finally ready to go home.

Eugene was born on October 30, 1939 to Irene Adaline Smith and Laurence Eugene Haskell in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest of 6 boys. In 1956, 1 year before graduating from Granite High School, Eugene joined the Marines. After graduation he went to boot camp and began his 39 year service in the military.

In 1958 he attended Weber State University and it was there he met his wife Gail Holbrook. They were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 8, 1959. The 1960’s brought big changes. Eugene enlisted in the Coast Guard which moved them to California and it was there they began their family. Eugene served in the Vietnam War for 13 months leaving his 3 small sons and a pregnant wife behind.

After coming home he joined the National Guard and finished his degree at Weber State in 1971. Shortly after he moved his family of 6 to Boise, Idaho where he made his forever home and added the last 3 children. In 1980 the Army was calling and he answered. He spent the next 16 years working at Gowen Field and eventually retiring as a Sergeant Major in 1996. During those 16 years Gail and Gene worked at the BSU Pavilion and created an entire community there. Coaches, announcers, players and cheerleaders all knew their names, but mostly called them Mom and Pops. With all of their kids grown, Eugene was ready to do some more traveling with his wife. They took many trips to Seattle and New Jersey where they had kids living at the time, went on Alaska cruises, Alaska fishing trips, annual trips to Hawaii and lots of other destinations where BSU was playing football. His favorite destination was Italy! In 2009 he lost Gail less than a year from their 50th wedding anniversary.

Eugene kept busy with his growing number of grandkids. He spent countless hours at football games, lacrosse, tennis matches, basketball games, swim meets, volleyball games, wrestling matches, softball and baseball games. The coach in him could never stop and he’d often coach from the sidelines whether his grandkids could hear him or not! He endured choir concerts but NEVER missed a chance to go to an orchestra concert! In 2011 he married a lifelong family friend Linda Lee Pixley Scown. Sickness came shortly after the nuptials and she passed in 2022. At this time in his life faith and family were the only things he did or cared for. Eugene became a weekly temple worker and it brought him such joy! Attending the temple was a regular part of his routine that in his words was “awesome” He started to watch his grandkids have kids and again so much joy!

Eugene is leaving behind a posterity that adored him, each of them carrying pieces of who he was and lessons he taught.

He is survived by his brother Terry Haskell, sisters in law, Doris Buckley Haskell, Judy Wilfong Haskell, Diana Dean Haskell and Jill Grote Haskell, his 9 children Stewart (Kris), Grant (Jamie), David (DarNell), Tracy Mariscal (Ed), Catherine Clark (Mike) Kristin Haskell, Heather Haskell, Aaron Haskell, and Shandis Prindle (Curt), his 23 grand children and his 5 great grand children.

He is preceded in death by his wives, Gail Holbrook and Linda Lee Pixley, his brothers Richard Haskell, Phillip Haskell, Craig (Sandy) Haskell and Kevin Haskell, his grandsons Brock Micheal Hull, and Tyler Justin Hull.
