Edward Enoch Bloom, M.D. was born on May 2, 1936, in Hollywood, California to Ellen Linnea Nicholson and Edward “Jack” Bloom, and passed away peacefully in Garden City, Idaho on May 30, 2026. He was a kind, loving, intelligent man who listened fully and cared deeply, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Edward graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles, California in 1954. It was during his senior year of high school when his mother was sick with cancer that he discovered his life’s calling to become a doctor and help people. Edward attended the University of Southern California for his undergraduate. During his freshman year, he was asked by a young lady, Patricia Hackelman, to attend a Sady Hopkins dance at his former high school. After a cheeky, “I’ll have to check my calendar,” he said yes and the rest is history! He completed his undergraduate degree in 1958 and began Medical School at USC. On December 19, 1959, he married Patricia. In 1963, he entered the United States Air Force, Medical Corps., as a flight surgeon with the rank of Captain. He served proudly during the cold war until 1965 at Beale Air Force Base, CA, where his first child, Jonathan, was born. He continued his training and became a board certified otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) and head and neck surgeon, during which time son #2, Timothy, was born. Edward practiced medicine from 1970-2016, somehow finding time to add son #3, Patrick, and finally a daughter, Carrie, to the family. He was a great doctor, but an even better Dad!
Edward had many hobbies and interests besides being a great doc and proud vet. He was a model train enthusiast (and really, ALL trains!), USC Trojan football fan (FIGHT ON!), a lifelong LA Dodger fan (started when they were in Brooklyn!), and later in life added the Boise State Broncos to his favorite teams. He loved to attend Celtic Games and proudly wore his Clan Gunn kilt. He was a Trekkie, and known to say, “Live Long and Prosper.” And he did…90 years and a life rich in love, family, and an abiding faith in Jesus, his Savior. It is because of this faith his family can rest assured he is in heaven right now.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ellen Bloom; his first-born son, Jonathan, and his grandchild Andrew. He is survived by his loving bride of 66 years, Patricia; 3 of his 4 children, Tim, Pat, and Carrie; 9 of 10 grandchildren, J. Patrick, Jerred, Laura, Jake, Joshua, Jaqueline, Andrea, Paul and Naomi; and 1 great grandchild, Tatum Jo; as well as daughters-in-law Gina and Becky and son-in-law and go to tech support, Mark.
Edward’s family would like to thank the lovely people of White Oak Hospice and Avista Senior Living for all their loving care. Also, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Edward’s memory to the FSHD Society, @ www.fshdsociety.org, or at PO Box 411617, Boston, MA 02241-1617. They are making great strides in research regarding the type of muscular dystrophy that affected both Edward and his family. Thank you.
