Dustin Lee Surbrook, 45, of Kuna, passed away on May 2, 2026.
Dustin was born on April 23, 1981, in Mountain Home to Sherry York and Carl Surbrook. He spent his childhood in Glenns Ferry, Mountain Home and Boise. Places that shaped his love for open spaces, dusty roads and a life outdoors.
As a youngster, Dustin spent much of his time with his grandparents, aunt, uncles, cousins and later his little brother, hunting, camping and exploring the desert hills. Through these experiences he had memories and stories that he often reflected on with great pride and gratitude. It was likely at his grandparents’ auto shop, York’s Automotive in Mountain Home, where his lifelong passion for mechanics first took root. His Aunt Denise remembered him as a sweet and curious boy, always wanting to be a part of fixing things.
In 2008, Dustin married Megan Haase. Shortly after, their family grew from two to five with the addition of their three children, Zacharey, Dakota and Summer. They made their home in Boise and later Kuna. Dustin shared his passions with his kids. From collecting Hot Wheels to off-roading, camping, hunting and wrenching on just about anything with an engine. Together, they built a life centered around family, adventure and time spent side by side in the garage or out in the dirt.
For several years, Dustin worked as a tow truck driver, a job he truly loved and took great pride in. It was here he earned the nickname “Hooker,” a title he wore on his arm and license plate. He often told stories about the heavy, complicated and sometimes unbelievable recoveries he handled. He had a rare confidence and skill behind the wheel and he knew it.
Later, Dustin joined Mountain Steel, where he became a man of many trades. While he learned numerous fabrication skills, he became especially known as the delivery driver. Once again mastering the art of maneuvering oversized loads through tight spaces with patience and precision. He found deep satisfaction in doing difficult work well and getting the job done right.
Dustin will perhaps be remembered most for his incredible knowledge and natural talent in auto mechanics. He never backed down from a challenge. In fact, the more complicated a problem seemed, the more determined he became to solve it. He gave his time and knowledge freely to help others. Whether it be friends, family, coworkers and even strangers he came always ready with a tool, advice and a willingness to figure it out.
Riding and off-roading were among his favorite pastimes, especially with his brother and many friends. Whether in his Suzuki Samurai, Pathfinder, four-wheelers or dirt bikes, Dustin loved getting out, getting muddy and finding the roughest terrain possible. He loved the mess, the challenge and especially in showing the pictures afterward while telling the story of how he got himself into and out of whatever difficult situation he got into.
Dustin was also known for his particular ways, especially when it came to types of food, food preparation and things like condiments. He had very specific preferences, which those close to him knew well. Yet at the same time, he remembered how others liked their pizza, hamburger or sandwich and whether they preferred chorizo over a beef frank. He also loved cooking on his Pit Boss, preparing Thanksgiving turkeys, family meals and the abundance of meats for the annual 4th of July party.
All this said, he was really a pretty simple man with a life filled with grit, simple joys, generosity and stories. Many of which will be retold for years to come. He leaves behind memories painted in grease, mud and family traditions.
Dustin is survived by his wife, Megan Surbrook; his children, Zacharey Kent Surbrook, Dakota Allen Surbrook, and Summer Ariana Surbrook; his brother Cody Lovelace; his grandfather, Dean York; his aunt, Denise Trimble and her spouse, Brian Trimble; his uncle Jim York; his cousins, Marty Allen and spouse Kadie Keshian, Lisa Allen, Maggie Pruett, and Angelica Sellman; his extended cousins Harlie Pruett, Chance Keshian, Cody Allen and Emilia Allen. Not to mention his many other extended family members, friends and co-workers.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Surbrook; his beloved grandmother, Norma York; and his adored uncle, Kent Pruett.
