Dr. Furm Mofford Duncan, Jr. passed away on April 14, 2026, at the age of 88. His wife Jan was at his side.
Furm was born on April 2, 1938, in Loma Linda, California. He was raised in Beaverton, Oregon, where he graduated from Beaverton High School and served as student body president. He went on to attend Willamette University for undergraduate, then University of Washington for his Master's in Nuclear Physics, then he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oregon Medical School. Following medical school, he served for two years in the Peace Corps in Bogota, Colombia, reflecting an early commitment to service that would define his life and career.
Furm dedicated more than 40 years to the practice of medicine as a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. He practiced for over 20 years at Lower Columbia Women’s Clinic in Longview, Washington before founding Treasure Valley Women’s Clinic in Ontario, Oregon, in 1994 where he served patients for another 20 years. Over the course of his career, he estimated that he delivered more than 12,000 babies—an extraordinary legacy that lives on through generations of families in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
In the office, Furm was known for being particular and for his colorful sense of humor, yet he was widely respected for his brilliance in practicing medicine and his deep commitment to his patients.
In 1994, Furm married the love of his life, Jan, whom he lovingly referred to as his “Janny.” Together, they made their home on a farm in Fruitland, Idaho, where they lived with his stepdaughter, Greta Saum. Furm and Jan enjoyed raising horses, growing grapes, and taking in the beauty of Idaho’s sunrises and sunsets. On the farm, he could often be seen riding his tractor across the pastures, mowing grass, and maintaining the land he cared for so deeply. He especially loved tending to the farm grounds, a place where he found both purpose and peace. Those who knew him, in particular his grandkids, affectionately referred to him as “Farmer Furm.”
Outside of his work, Furm enjoyed watching Duke basketball, as well as playing and following the game of golf—pastimes that brought him both excitement and relaxation. He also loved entertaining his grandkids when they would come over for visits, whether at home swimming in the pool, shooting airsoft guns, and riding horses; or out bowling, golfing, and Wahooz Family Fun Zone.
Furm is survived by his wife, Jan; his son, Dr. Scott (Caitlin) Duncan of South Carolina and his daughter, Tamara (Eric) Free of Santa Barbara, California; his stepdaughter, Greta Saum; his stepson, Greg (Cory Blystone) Saum of Vancouver, Washington; and stepson, Geoff (Lisa) Saum of Ontario, Oregon; and his very special dog, Sassy. He is also survived by his brother, Pat (Sheri) Duncan of Deer Valley, Utah; and his sister, Nina (George) Cruzado of Park City, Utah. His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren.
Furm was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Furm Mofford Duncan, Sr.; his brother, Bob Duncan; his son, Robert “Rob” Duncan; and his grandson, Parker Duncan.
