Dorothy Lee Manning
Dorothy Lee (Payton) Manning was born February 9, 1937, in Shoshone, ID, on a farm in the middle of a snowstorm, and passed into Jesus’ loving arms on the morning of June 22, 2024. She was raised on the family farm and worked hard during her youth milking cows and baling hay with her brothers Everett and Richard. Her mother gave her two options for schooling: Teaching or Nursing. Mom chose nursing and went to school in Ogden, UT, after high school. While in high school she met Rupert Manning and they were married after nursing school in Shoshone. They then moved to Walnut Creek, CA, where Rupert got a job in computer operations. Three daughters were born there, Linda, Sheryl, and Nancy. The family was then transferred with Rupert’s job to Boise, ID, where a fourth daughter was born, Jolene. Dorothy started work at St. Luke’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse and worked on many floors, ending her career in cardiac care on 3 West. She met some of her best friends at St. Luke’s as fellow nurses, patients, and doctors adored her. She and Rupert raised the four girls with much love, morals, and a strong work ethic. She loved her girls and did everything for them, dedicating her life to raising them. She was very proud of all of them and their accomplishments. In 1999, she met the love of her life, Gus Coon, and they spent the last 25 years together loving each other with all their hearts. Dorothy retired from St. Lukes after 30 years of service. She and Gus traveled many places following the Boise State Broncos football team and spending winters in Mazatlán, Mexico. Dorothy loved to dance and her and Gus were always on the dance floor wherever they went. She never met a stranger and was a very trusting person who believed in each person she met. Dorothy was very proud of her 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She looked forward to making lunch for her grandchildren who attended Borah High School and all their friends. She was a kind and loving friend and counselor to all. Her hospitality was immeasurable, and everyone was welcome in her home of 56 years on Colonial Drive. We are grateful and thankful to the staff at Grace Assisted Living and St. Luke’s Hospice for their tender and loving care.
She is survived by her four daughters, Linda (Jonathan) Bloomer, Sheryl (Tom) Todd, Nancy (Chris) Carmine, and Jolene (Travis) Mather.
