Doris Elaine Mackey February 22, 1933 — peacefully departed at the splendid age of 93
Doris Elaine Mackey slipped away gently in her sleep after a life that could only be described as full—full of laughter, conversation, movement, and a touch of delightful mischief. Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, she carried her vibrant spirit across many places she called home, including the communities of Vale and Annex, Oregon; Weiser, Caldwell, and Kuna, Idaho; and the sunny stretches of San Francisco, Salinas, and Downey, California.
She was the beloved daughter of Arthur L. and Evelyn L. Hess, and the devoted mother of Joseph M. Becker III and Robert J. Becker, as well as stepdaughter Jerilyn Mackey. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Shayla A. Becker, Robert W. Becker, and Boston A. Becker, and her great-granddaughter Lyla Burkman. She was also a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
Doris shared her life with three husbands—Joseph M. Becker II, George W. Carson, and Roger B. Mackey—and was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dean A. Hess and Duane F. Hess; her son, Joseph M. Becker III; and her husband, Roger B. Mackey.
To know Doris was to know joy in motion. She laughed easily, sang often, and never passed up an opportunity to dance. A devoted conversationalist, she relished her morning coffee gatherings, where stories flowed as freely as the laughter—whether or not the jokes quite landed. She had a playful streak, delighting in practical jokes and finding humor in nearly everything.
Her faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses was dear to her heart, and she treasured her spiritual community deeply. Throughout her life, Doris was no stranger to hard work. She served as a medical assistant for both a dentist, Dr. Lee, and an ophthalmologist, Dr. Fouch—both of whom she remembered with great affection. She also contributed her time to the American Cancer Society, worked in manufacturing, and embraced the demanding yet rewarding life of a farmer’s wife, tending to work on 40 acres.
Doris lived boldly, loved deeply, and laughed generously. She leaves behind a tapestry of memories that will continue to bring smiles—and perhaps a chuckle or two—to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
