Dirk DeBoer was born May 27, 1955, in Apeldoorn, Holland, to Douwe and Margaretha DeBoer. He was the seventh of ten children. The family emigrated to the USA in 1959 when Dirk was four years old. They began life in America in Idaho and settled into their first residence in Fruitvale, near Council. The DeBoers eventually moved to Meridian, where they had a dairy farm for many years. Dirk attended Meridian High School and began working in construction. After working as a construction supervisor for Intel in Kiryat Gat, Israel, he returned to the states and established a successful commercial construction business in Boise, New Space Construction, from which he retired in 2018.
Dirk married Suzanne Nelson in 1978, and they had two children, Carrie and Todd. He loved his children and was very proud of them. Dirk and Suzie bought property in Centerville, ID, in 2008. They built a cabin in 2016 and spent many happy days and weekends four-wheeling and snowmobiling before moving to the mountains full time after retirement. Dirk also enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and spent several winters in Yuma, AZ, where they bought a second home. Dirk had many friends in both of these communities and enjoyed hosting them at firepits and Boise State football parties.
Dirk and Suzie loved to travel. In addition to their travels in Israel, they enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and Alaska, as well as London and Europe. A special highlight was spending time in Dirk’s native Holland, where they reconnected with family members and saw the old homeplace in Apeldoorn, where he remembered, as a young boy, riding his beloved auto step—which he would later learn to call a scooter.
Dirk loved to bowl and was in several leagues. He also raised roller pigeons, which he raced in local and national competitions for many years. He loved his dogs, Brandy and Allie, as well as his 1969 Chevy Nova SS, which he was working to restore just before his death. His other loves included NASCAR racing and the Denver Broncos (sometimes).
Dirk passed away at the age of 71 after a struggle with cancer. Besides immediate family, Dirk is survived by four siblings. A Celebration of Life will be planned for this coming spring.
