In Loving Memory of Dennis Bruce Samer (1944–2026)
Dennis Bruce Samer, 81, a lifelong Idahoan whose life was defined by service, music, and a profound love for his family, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, Judi, and dear friends and family who had provided a circle of comfort throughout his final weeks.
Early Life and Education
Born in Caldwell, Idaho, to Michael John and Goldie Chase Samer, Dennis was the youngest of four children. He grew up in the communities of Parma and New Plymouth, graduating from New Plymouth High School before attending the University of Idaho on football and ROTC scholarships. A member of the Theta Chi fraternity, Dennis was also a gifted musician; during his school years, he played bass and guitar alongside the musicians who would later form Paul Revere and the Raiders.
A Legacy in Education
While music was a lifelong passion, Dennis chose a career in education to make a lasting impact on his community. He began as a history and civics teacher at Hillside Junior High in Boise. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Judi Milrany, a fellow teacher.
Dennis dedicated 25 years to Capital High School as a guidance counselor—a role he cherished, especially during the years his two sons, Joe and Bob, were students there. He later earned his administrative credentials and retired in 2000 as the Assistant Principal of East Junior High, concluding a distinguished career that spanned every level of secondary education.
Retirement and Joys
In retirement, Dennis and Judi shared a love for travel, leading student groups through the People-to-People program to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. They also explored the world through Road Scholar, visiting China, Peru, and Ecuador.
At home, Dennis was often found in his garage, meticulously renovating his 1959 Ford Skyliner, or playing music. He was an active member of the Boise First United Church of Christ, serving as Moderator, and remained connected to his community by meeting often with retired educator friends and attending Boise State University basketball and football games.
Above all, Dennis was a devoted "Grandpa." Whether he was attending sporting events for his grandchildren or simply spending time with them, his family was his greatest pride.
Survival and Service
Dennis is survived by his wife, Judi; his sons, Joe (Johnna) and Bob (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Ella, Avery, and Nate; and an extended family nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Zelda, Jim, and Dick.
A man who believed in living "whole-heartedly," Dennis requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boise First United Church of Christ, The Idaho Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will be planned for the Spring of 2026 and communicated to all his friends and family.
