David Hayden Clegg,
David Hayden Clegg, Eagle, Idaho, lost his battle with cancer, passed away peacefully January 31, 2023 alongside his loving wife Shirley, and devoted son Alan. We feel eternally blessed to have known, loved and lived with this great man. We are grateful for an eternal plan and a loving Savior that has provided a plan for us to be together for eternity. He fought the good fight and lived with integrity, passion for family and his deep-rooted beliefs in the Lord’s eternal plan. He held true to his convictions without wavering. Daily, he would kneel in prayer then get up and go to work. His passion for his family and perseverance in completing the task was unmatched. To use words like “unmovable” and “unshakeable” to describe Dad’s faith is not paying idle tribute. For underneath that warm smile and accepting heart was an unmovable foundation of faith in Jesus Christ and His restored gospel. We saw him weather excruciating trials, the loss of businesses that he had spent years building, endure the loss of family members, repeatedly beat cancer, and otherwise endure the refiner’s fire, all while laying ahold of his faith with the firmest of grips.
Some wise person once said: “The Lord places warriors in the garden not gardeners in the war.” David was a warrior! We will miss his strong hugs and leadership!
David was born to Lucile and Donald Clegg on January 21, 1934. He grew up on a small farm in Bench, Idaho. Growing a deep love for being outdoors – riding his horse, fishing, hunting and farming. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). He went to Grace high school where he was active in basketball, baseball and football. He was voted freshman class president and most popular his senior year. He was considered a prankster and would love teasing and tricking his friends into doing some risky things that brought a lot of joy and laughter.  After high school, David left for Oakland, California to work for Standard Oil for a short time. David then took a job in Seattle, Washington working for Boeing Aircraft. While at Boeing, he came home to pursue the future love of his life, Shirley Gunnell, in Soda Springs, Idaho. They were married on December 15, 1954 in the Gunnell home and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple on February 18, 1966. David and Shirley have 7 children, 36 grandchildren (two preceded in death) 62 great grandchildren with 6 more expecting.
Over the years, David never wavered from living the gospel. He held many callings in the LDS church that he truly loved. He later served a full-time mission for the church with his beautiful wife in Nauvoo, Illinois – proselyting, singing, acting in plays and doing service where he developed a deep love and personal witness of the Prophet Joseph Smith. After their mission, he served in the LDS Temple with his wife for many years as an ordinance worker. He played in events and plays due to his heritage from his second great grandfather Brigham Young. He was extremely active in the scouting program where he received the honor of Wood Badge Silver Beaver, which was one of his greatest joys. He became a very successful farmer and rancher as well as a real estate agent and developer. He also served as Mayor of Soda Springs for 8 years. His love for freedom, the flag, and the constitution of America was a source of spiritual strength for him throughout his life.
He loved attending his children’s sporting events or activities as often as possible. He taught his family his deep love for the outdoors and hard work. Even though he moved to Eagle, Idaho several years ago, he never lost his love for Soda Springs. It is a delight to call David, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and disciple of Jesus Christ. David has left an amazing legacy!
His parents Donald and Lucile Clegg preceded David in death, along with his brother Grant his sister Carlie Ann, his grandchildren Brennen David Clegg, Annie Clegg and his great-grandchild Cannon Rich and Jacob Pugmire. His wife, Shirley Clegg, survives him along with all his children and their spouses Jalayne and (Kim Pugmire), Kerry and (Lisa Clegg), Kevin and (Catherine Clegg), Alan Clegg, Mark and (Cynthia Clegg), Jeff and (Audra Clegg,) Kimberly and (Robert Pearson).
