Daryl Elizabeth (Arner) Janssen, 86, passed away on Tuesday, July 18 at her home in Meridian ID with family at her side. Daryl was born in Tamaqua, PA to Warren and Alberta ‘Birdie’ Arner on February 5, 1937. She attended schools in and around Tamaqua until 1953, when the family moved to Santa Ana, CA.
Daryl was the oldest of five (5) daughters and decided at 16 it would be best to leave school to work and help support the family. Of her many positions, her most memorable was sewing elastic bands on men’s underwear at a factory. In 1957, she met a Marine, William ‘Bill’ Leroy Janssen, while she was on her way to church. She agreed to take him back to base in Joshua Tree, CA if he went with her. He agreed, a romance followed, and the couple was soon married on May 10, 1958, in Santa Ana, CA.
While Bill was working full time to provide for the family, Daryl was content working at home, raising four (4) active children, and supporting their participation in sports, academics, after-school events and summer activities.
Daryl and Bill decided to leave California and retire to Eagle, ID in April 2000 to be closer to family. Bill was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007, and passed soon after the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in May 2008.
Daryl loved reading, especially western romance novels, Readers Digest, and the local newspaper ‘front to back’ — along with completing word search puzzles and traveling with Bill on fishing trips. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, and she will be remembered fondly for years to come.
Daryl is survived by her four (4) children, Darlene (Bill) Thomson of Hudson, MA, Nancy Bomer of Meridian, ID, Candy (Craig) Mills of Clive, IA, and Ron (Debi) Janssen of Greenville, SC; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and three (3) sisters, Grace Garratt of Boise, ID, Fay Vonada of Fallbrook, CA, and Jeannie French of Orange, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William ‘Bill’ Leroy Janssen, her parents, Warren and Alberta Arner, and one sister, Joann Blevins.
