Darel Lee Staufer, 83, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on December 29, 2023.
Born in Argonia, Kansas, he attended Norwich High School and Wichita State University, after which he served in the United States Air Force where his career in computer programming began. In high school, Darel played football and basketball, worked at his parents’ grocery store and bucked bales in the hot, humid Kansas summers. He married his sweetheart, Judy Honn, and the two became parents to three (rowdy, hilarious and loving) boys, Steve, Matt and Joe. The family lived in Lakewood, Colorado, and then moved to Boise in 1975 where Darel finished his career with the Department of the Interior, Office of Aircraft Services.
After retirement, he worked for several years at Intermountain Gas Company and began his hobby — or perhaps obsession — of purchasing antiques on eBay. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, antiquing, and providing the best playground for his boys and their friends, keeping them nearby.
Darel is survived by his loving wife, Judy; sons, Steve, Matt (John), and Joe (Amy); grandson, Jack (Codi); sister, Janis Weaver-Ring (Richard Ring); brother-in-law, Mark Honn, and many nieces and nephews. Family was everything to him and he loved them all, including his canine children. Darel and his family created many cherished memories with the Rueb family, spending holidays together and sharing a cabin in Idaho City. Darel loved to dance and could cut a mean rug.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Freda, father, Edward, sister, Joni Ray (Marion), and his brother-in-law, Larry Honn (Barbara).
Darel’s ashes will be laid to rest at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held later in the new year. A public viewing is scheduled for January 5, 2024, from 6pm to 8pm at Bowman Funeral Home, 10254 W Carlton Bay Dr, Garden City, ID.
