Charles W Sterling, retired Idaho State Policeman, (Patrol Car 416) went 1042 (out of service) for the last time April 16, 2024.  Charles was 95 years old.

Charles was born and raised in Baker, Oregon.  He was an athlete at Baker High School excelling at basketball and track.  He had many outdoor adventures hunting, fishing and exploring during his youth.  Charles worked summers at a ranch near Baker where he met the love of his life, Dorothy who was visiting her Aunt May.

Charles joined the Navy in 1949 and was stationed in San Diego, CA.  When Dorothy came for a visit, he suggested they get married. So they grabbed two strangers for witnesses and went to the justice of the peace.  Their marriage lasted 57 years and produced four sons.

One of Charles most memorable experiences was time he spent on the USS Stickell; DD888.  He was a true “Tin Can Sailor”!  He had many stories that he told to any and all that would listen.

Charles brought his family to Boise, Idaho in 1957.  Charles was an avid fisherman and bird hunter, which he passed on to his four sons.  Charles also loved to make his own fishing Rods and tie his own fly fishing flies.  Charles shared the beauty of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with his sons by taking them on river fishing trips.

Retirement was a special time for Charles because he expanded his fishing adventures by including his best friend Dorothy; his wife.  They got a big truck, camper, and a bass boat.  It became evident from the beginning that Dorothy was the better fishermen based on the size of fish she caught!  Charles loved every moment with her.

Dorothy died in 2006.  Charles never recovered from that loss!  He stopped fishing after her death but provided fishing guidance for family and friends.

As Charles aged he suffered from several health issues but he never lost his will to live on. Charles is survived by his sons Gary (Deborah), Marvin (Bobbie), Darrell (Sue), Dwayne, 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and countless friends.

The family would like to thank the loving, caring staff at Paramount Parks in Eagle.  They were our extended family.

A special thank you to Lighthouse Hospice and Palliative Care!  The staff of this organization were absolutely amazing!
