Catherine Rose Smith
Catherine Rose Smith, affectionately known as Cathi, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Boise, Idaho, Cathi was the cherished daughter of Walter and Violetta Smith, and the youngest among her siblings. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Smith, as well as her parents and siblings, Lee, Lula, John, Arlene, Larry, and Vonda.
Cathi’s early years were spent in McCall, where she attended grade school and later high school. On December 30, 1961, she exchanged vows with William “Bill” Smith in a double wedding ceremony with Bill’s brother Larry and Connie Smith. Together, Cathi and Bill embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and adventure, residing in McCall, Burgdorf, Cascade, and eventually settling in Riggins in 1963. Their union was blessed with three children: Dan (Evelyn) of Tonasket, WA, Debbie (Tim Fischer) of Riverside, WA, and Don (Lisa) of Riggins, ID.
Throughout her life, Cathi dedicated herself to various occupations, including roles at the Forest Service, as a waitress, and later as a store clerk and bookkeeper. Her commitment to excellence and her warm demeanor endeared her to many, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her. Cathi’s tenure at Rapid River Market and later at the Merc earned her the admiration and respect of the community, where she became a beloved fixture in the hearts of many.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Cathi found joy in simple pleasures, particularly knitting and crocheting, skills she honed under the guidance of her dear friend June Hollenbeak. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored immensely.
Cathi is survived by her children, daughter-in-laws, son-in-law, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, along with her sister-in-laws, Connie, Linda, and Deanne, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her thoughtful gestures, and her unwavering dedication to her family. Cathi’s legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In addition to her human family, Cathi was deeply loved by all animals she encountered, and her kindness extended to the furry friends who brightened her life.
Rest in peace, Cathi. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
