Betty Jo Coursey, 88, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, in Boise, Idaho. She was born on April 9, 1937, in Bentonville, Arkansas, and raised in Apple Valley near Parma. She graduated from Parma High School. Betty Jo married Dave Rieb and together they became a familiar presence in Nyssa, Oregon, through their work with Rieb's grocery stores. Later relocating to Ontario, she transitioned into local journalism with a focus on advertising, contributing to both the Argus Observer and the Independent Enterprise. Her professional efforts reflected a strong dedication to supporting local businesses and civic life.
Known for her sweet yet sassy spirit, Betty Jo brought warmth and wit to every encounter. She enjoyed time around the bridge table, trips to the casino, and moments shared with family. Her vibrant personality made her a cherished presence in many lives.
She is lovingly remembered by her partner Richard Mallon; sister Virginia Edwards of Anderson, Missouri; brother-in-law Willis Wiley of Twin Falls, Idaho; son David Rieb and his partner Amee Schwab of Kennewick, Washington; daughter Jennifer Rieb of La Grande, Oregon; grandson David Rieb of Nampa, Idaho; granddaughters Stephanie Hernandez (Efran) of Pasco, Washington; Angela Yamamoto (Adam) of Payette, Idaho; Sarah Smith of La Grande, Oregon; Chasidy Little Light Nunez of Nampa, Idaho; and Lacey Fitzgerald Insko.
Her legacy continues through fifteen great-grandchildren and the anticipated arrival of a great-great-grandson. She also held dear her nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee A. Cash and Bernice A. Sommars; sisters Katherine Stephens and Elaine Wiley; along with other beloved family members.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Enhabit Hospice for their compassionate care during this time—Lindsay, Troy, and Mario are especially appreciated. A graveside service will be held on October 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery, 10100 N Horseshoe Bend Rd., Garden City, Idaho. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
