Alfred Loyal Schimpf

Alfred Loyal Schimpf, 82, of Boise, Idaho, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, creativity, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Born on March 6, 1944, in Ontario, Oregon, Alfred was the son of Fred Howard Schimpf and Yvonne Louise (Rice) Schimpf. He was raised in Idaho and graduated from Council High School in May 1962 before attending Boise Junior College. During his years at Council High School, Alfred distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete and became one of the school’s greatest sports stars. He was the State Scoring Champion in basketball and still holds the school’s all-time scoring records in football—accomplishments of which he remained immensely proud throughout his life.

On January 7, 1963, Alfred answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned the Cold War and Vietnam era. Trained first as a Non-Morse Intercept Operator and later as a Communications Center Specialist, he played a vital role in maintaining the Air Force’s secure worldwide communications network. After reenlisting in 1967, he graduated as the Honor Graduate of his Communications Center Specialist class at Sheppard Air Force Base, reflecting his dedication and commitment to excellence. During his service, Alfred spent more than three and a half years stationed overseas, including assignments with the 601st Tactical Communications Squadron in Europe. He achieved the rank of Sergeant, completed supervisory training, and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster in recognition of two separate periods of outstanding service to his country.

Following his military service, Alfred returned to civilian life and worked as a screen printer before pursuing his entrepreneurial spirit as the owner of Potato Alfredo. Whatever path he chose, he approached it with determination, creativity, and a desire to continually learn and grow.

Alfred shared many wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Judith Ellen (Roberts) Schimpf, who preceded him in death. Together they built a loving family that remained the greatest joy of his life.

Gifted with both artistic talent and an inquisitive mind, Alfred enjoyed playing softball, drawing, painting, jewelry making, and designing his own sports card games. He loved trivia, appreciated the beauty of nature—especially birds—and found great happiness in sharing his interests with family and friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence, creativity, generous spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed.

Alfred is lovingly remembered by his children, Shane Schimpf and Krista Laurino (Camille Hays); his grandchildren, Grayson Laurino (Samantha Laurino), Steven Laurino (Christina Laurino), and Harper Schimpf; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Ryiann Laurino, Brooks Laurino, Charli-Jo Laurino, and Romi Laurino.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Ellen (Roberts) Schimpf; his father, Fred Howard Schimpf; and his mother, Yvonne Louise (Rice) Schimpf.

Alfred will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, proud Air Force veteran, accomplished communicator, gifted artist, talented athlete, and loyal friend. His life was defined by honor, integrity, quiet service, and a sincere appreciation for both people and the world around him. His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

Interment with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise, Idaho.
