Afton “Toni” Davies died peacefully in her sleep on October 28, 2024, at her home in Boise, Idaho. She was ninety-nine.
Toni was born July 5 th , the day after her mother won the ladies’ 1925 Fourth of July footrace in the small town of Upalco, Utah. She was youngest of Warren and Lula Mecham’s ten children.
By the time Toni was a teenager, the family was living in Salt Lake City. During World War II she contributed to the war effort by working in the local ammunition plants.
It was while she was out dancing one night in Salt Lake City that a young navy veteran spotted her from across the crowded room, announcing to his friend, “See that girl right there doing the jitterbug? I’m going to marry her.” Monte Davies made good on his promise February, 20, 1949, when he and Toni were married in Elko, Nevada. The couple returned to Salt Lake City, where their three children, Jolene, Michael and Debra were born.
The Davies family moved to Boise in 1963, where Toni took a part-time job at a grocery store bakery. Toni was very personable and enjoyed chatting with customers. Her honest bubbly personality later helped her build a following as a salesperson at Canfield’s dress shop in downtown Boise. She became an expert at choosing and fitting fashions, so much so that eventually she purchased Canfield’s dress shop and ran it successfully it for many years.
Toni only lived four months after her husband Monte died. Proceeding Toni in death were her father and mother; nine siblings, including sisters Lila Farnsworth, Olive Woodard, Wanda Loveland and Gladys Clayton; brothers Theodore, Ellis, Wilmer, Marlow and Joseph Mecham; granddaughter Ginger Schooly.
Toni is survived by; children Jolene (Jerry) Fink; Michael (Julianne) Davies ; and Debra (Don) Demurs; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on November 18, 2024 at 2:00 pm with a visitation held one hour prior to the service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 3700 S. Maple Grove Boise, Idaho.
Toni will be interred with her husband Monte at the Boise, Idaho Veterans Cemetery.
