Thelma Leona KappelmanMarch 5, 1925 ~ October 2, 2017 (age 92)
Mom was born on March 5, 1925 in Burke, So. Dak. to Lawrence and Leona Klas and passed away in Nampa, Idaho on October 2, 2017 in the loving arms of her children. She graduated from Colome, S. Dak. High School and a business college.
After graduation, she worked at a bank in Colome, So. Dak. Following her family’s move to Nampa in 1943, she worked at the old Albertson’s store in Nampa on 12th and 3rd St. and waited on Joe Albertson. She also worked at Rondavoo Market. She retired from the Idaho State Liquor Dispensary as the manager, one of the first female managers.
Her greatest job was being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a lover of cats, dogs, baby calves, Sassy Bird I, Sassy Bird II, Smokey, Mugsie, and Louie. Her family remembers her for her talents in hospitality, friendships, generosity, cribbage, gardening, canning, and cooking (especially her famous sour cream chocolate cake – right? Dave and Bill?). Her siblings and their spouses were kidders and pranksters.
She and dad knew each other in S. Dak. and Nebraska. One time Dad sat in a tree and courted her by throwing rotten tomatoes at her and her sister, Loraine. Dad followed mom to Nampa in 1943. They were married at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nampa on April 22, 1946. They were married for 64 years before he died in 2010.
Mom very actively volunteered with AARP, Nampa Senior Center, the election board, as an NCOA council member and at her church, St. Paul’s. She was a union member. She was a life-long Democrat and proudly voted for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. She was an inspiration and solid model for what we can all hope to achieve as we get older.
She is survived by her children: Judy Dyer, Dianne (Preston) Christensen, Linda (Sid) Linck, John Kappelman, Jr., Jim (Zsofia) Kappelman, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A sister, Virginia (Jerry) Fehringer, a brother Leroy (Brenda) Klas, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her son, Steve, her son-in-law, James Dyer, her parents, one brother, Walt, one sister, Loraine, and friends too numerous to count.
Visitation will be at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, followed by the Rosary at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (510 W. Roosevelt, Nampa). Funeral services will be Friday, October 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery (2014 S. Powerline, Nampa).
Donations may be made to Nampa Senior Center (207 Constitution Way, Nampa, ID 83686) or “One Mind at a Time” (www.onemindethiopia.org), an international educational program started by her grandson, Jack.
