Richard “Chip” Carlson

On September 30, 2017 Richard “Chip” Carlson passed away giving his beloved family and friends the opportunity to begin the cherished journey of celebrating his amazing life. Chip passed away, just as he wished, at his home surrounded by family and friends after an extended, hard fought battle with cancer like the soldier he was.

From 1965 to 1967 Chip served as a proud soldier in the 11th Armored Cavalry in the Vietnam War. Even though he was a man of few words he would always share his war experiences to those who would listen. We believe he was thankful he was allowed to fight for his country and he defended and supported all veterans until he could fight no more! To his Army buddies we know he would like to say “farewell till we meet again”.

Chip was born on May 6, 1945 in Wendell, Idaho to Harold and Mary (Brennan) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Jerome, Idaho. After graduation he attended the University of Idaho for a period time until he was drafted in the Army.

After his discharge he went to work for Newton and Schaffer Engineering in Twin Falls and discovered his vocation in life.  He worked an apprenticeship where he studied and received his certificate as a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor.  He later went on to get his surveyors license in the States of Montana, Nevada and California.  Chip loved his work and devoted himself to all he did.  Some say he was “one of the best!”

Shortly after his discharge Chip met his life partner, Terry Hanel. The couple married on August 17, 1968 and recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary before passing. From their union was born his only child Trina (Mike) Dreher and from that union was born the “apple of his eye,” his granddaughter Allynn Dreher. He truly was the best husband, dad and Papa anyone could imagine. All who knew him recognized him as a good, kind, quiet soul who worked hard and loved his family and friends.

Chip loved to golf and to go fly fishing in his younger years and always tied his own flies - a hobby he learned from his own father. He loved the mountains and, when Trina was young, loved camping and fishing.  Chip’s favorite places to enjoy the beauty of nature were Trail Creek and Copper Basin.

Chip is survived by his loving wife Terry, his daughter Trina (Mike) Dreher, granddaughter Allynn Grace Dreher, his brother Milt (Gay) Carlson and nieces and nephews: Liz Price, Chris Carlson, Becky Hanel and Shawna (Brian Mahrt) Hanel and their extended families. He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother and his precious niece Mary Carlson.

There will be a service in his honor at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, Idaho on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm (please arrive 15 minutes early).
