John Messenger passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2017 from COPD. He was born on January 23, 1947 in Seattle, Washington to Ralph and Anne (Lewis) Messenger.
The family moved to Cave Junction, Oregon for a few years, then returned to Seattle.
John graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1965. He attended Shoreline Community
College, obtaining an Associate of Arts Degree as a member of the school’s first graduating class.
John started his lifelong career in construction with Howard S. Wright Construction Co. Due to his exceptional capabilities, aptitude, enthusiasm and initiative, he rose from Apprentice to Journeyman Carpenter in record setting time and retired as a Construction Superintendent. He worked on many of the high rise buildings in Seattle during the 1980’s and 1990’s and was a lifetime member of Local 31.
John married Phyllis Rosekrans on May 22, 1982 in Reno, Nevada. They enjoyed gardening together and he created beautiful fuchsia baskets for their Shoreline, Washington home. They traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska and most of the Western states. Montana was a favorite for fishing and watching the wildlife. He was a master wood worker, building bird houses, planter boxes and craft items Phyllis would come up with. They had their house built and moved to Star in 2006.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Anne Jordens and in-laws Warren and Jeannette Rosekrans. John is survived by his wife Phyllis; son Miles; grandchildren Owen and Olivia Messenger; Miles’ fiancée Bobbi Young (her son TJ); brother Terry; sisters Jane and Nancy and their spouses and several nieces and nephews.
