James "Jim" Wayne Schimmels, 75, of Boise, passed away Saturday, May 20,  2017 at Emerson House in Garden City.

 

Jim was born in Caldwell, Idaho on May 15, 1942.  He attended Wilder elementary schools before moving to Caldwell, graduating from Caldwell High School in 1960. After High School he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a diesel mechanical on the USS Cony, earning the rank of E-4 before being Honorably Discharged. He married Bonnie Dorsey in 1963. They had 3 children, son Mark in 1964, son Tim in 1966 and daughter Lena in 1968. They later divorced. Jim married Darlene Baldwin in 1988.

 

After being discharged from the Navy in 1964, Jim went to work as a lube man and truck mechanic for Bob & Johns International Harvester in Caldwell. In 1966, he moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon attending Oregon Tech and studying diesel mechanics while working as a truck mechanic for Juckleand Motors. Jim returned to Caldwell in 1968 and rejoined Bob & Johns as a heavy duty truck mechanic where he worked until 1977. For the next two years, he worked as a Floor Foreman and heavy equipment mechanic for Cesco John Deere in Boise. In 1979, he returned to Bob & Johns where he was promoted to Service Manager and held that position until the business closed in 1986. Over the next 15 years he worked for Larry Miller Auto and retired in 2004. At the time of his retirement he had earned multiple diesel and automotive certifications and training certificates.

Jim enjoyed spending countless hours building and racing stock cars at Meridian Speedway. He worked on various pit crews in the early 1970's before fielding his own car. Jim raced for many years at Meridian before retiring from driving. After this he spent his spare time helping other drivers build and repair their cars. Jim dedicated over 26 years of his life to the drivers, mechanics, and fans of racing. He was inducted into the Western Idaho Racing Association (WIRA) Hall of Fame for his contributions to the racing community.

 

Jim was also a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he served in many positions for the VFW at the State and Local level. He twice held the position of State Commander for the State of Idaho.

 

Jim spent the latter part of his retirement years enjoying camping, fishing, and "occasional" trips to Jackpot. He enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Schimmels, his mother Irene Luekenga, his step-father, Mac Wievoda, his sister, Janice Robbins and a great-grandaughter, Lyla Schimmels.

Jim is survived by his wife, Darlene of Boise, his children Mark (Lisa) Schimmels, Tim (Lisa) Schimmels, Lena (Eric) Amoah, and Kim (Greg) Carson. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

 

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Bowman Funeral Parlor from 5-7 pm. A memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 1 p.m. Internment at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
