George C. Baird

 George C. Baird, 91, a resident of Boise, passed away April 15, 2018 in Boise.

 George was born March 3, 1927, in Rigby, Idaho to Alexander Crompton Baird and Viola Susan Killian Baird, and spent early childhood in Rigby. George was raised all over eastern Idaho and spent many summers in Yellowstone National Park where his Father worked as the Park Electrician. He graduated from Pocatello High School and immediately joined the US Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific theater until the war was over, participating in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

 George was a hard worker. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad during his high school years. After returning from the war, he worked for the telephone company installing the first telephone system across eastern Idaho. On a whim he took a radio operator test in Boise and landed a job with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He periodically attended the FAA academy in Oklahoma City, OK over the years and finally retired as a radar specialist. He then went to work for the NEXRAD Radar Project as a Project Manager and spent a decade overseeing the installation of Doppler radar systems in the United States and its possessions.

 George married Betty Titus May 13, 1941 with whom he had two sons, George E. (Kathy) and Ronald L. He married LouDean Carter from Preston, Idaho on July 25, 1953. George and LouDean had four children: Mark A. (Sharon), Rebecca L. (DeVon), Bret (Lorraine) and Susan (Jim).  George’s greatest joys were his 23 grandchildren and their children, his horse Flicker and his best friend Petie (the dog).

 One of the great loves of George’s life was the outdoors where he loved to have fun and have adventures. He was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, boater, scuba diver and an award winning ski instructor. When George finally retired from the workforce in his seventies, he became a gentleman horse rancher and ski instructor/facilitator for his grandchildren. His other great love was people. He was a gentle and compassionate soul who served others and made a positive difference in many people’s lives.

 He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Fraternal Order of Elks, Intermountain Professional Ski Instructors Association, National Ski Patrol and Toastmasters.

 George was preceded in death by; Alexander Crompton Baird (father); Viola Susan Killian Baird (mother); Verla Hattie De Vries (sister); Lucille Ilene Prince (sister); Dale Devon Baird (brother); Flicker (best horse friend) and Petie (best dog friend).

 He is survived by; LouDean Carter Baird (wife) (Boise, ID); Albert “Bud” Baird (brother) (AZ); Blain Baird (brother) (Pacifica, CA); Children: George E. (Kathy) (Boise, ID); Ronald L. (S.) (St. Anthony, ID); Mark A. (Sharon) (Boise, ID); Rebecca (DeVon Koyle) (Boise, ID); Bret (Lorraine) (Boise, ID); and Susan (Jim Blaser) (New Meadows, ID); Grandchildren: Jason (Erin) ; Tonya (Rob Rapp) ; Amber; April; Nicholas (Sara); Jacob; (AnneMarie); Chelsea ; Levi; Jesse; Rebecca; Mark, Jr.; Alexander; Jennifer (Jon); Jamie (Nate); Daniel (Elizabeth); Scott (Hilary); Christine; Melissa (Karl); Shaun (Courtney); Ryan; Matthew (Miranda); Travis (Jayde); Cody.

 A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 20, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2680 Hill Rd. in Boise, with visitation at the Church beginning at 10:00 am.

 A committal service with military honors will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in George’s name be made to Bogus Basin Ski Patrol.
